What’s The Big Deal About GMO’s?

            How about a side of pesticides with your fruit or vegetables? Had you thought about it that way? Nearly seventy-five percent of the produce samples tested by the US Dept. of Agriculture in 2014 contained pesticide residues, which have been linked to health problems.

What exactly are GMOs? We have talked about this before, but to refresh your memory, GMOs are microorganisms, plants, and animals that have had their genes altered. I am talking about those used to alter the food supply. Common genetic modifications include:

  • Adding antibacterial genes to plants
  • Introducing genes that make organisms bigger or hardier
  • Making new foods by mixing genes from existing ones
  • Adding animal genes to plants and vice versa
  • Adding pesticides to seeds to kill the insects that might attack the plant

What I will be talking about this week is the most insidious product produced today by Monsanto, whom I call the “evil giant”, (think aspartame, agent orange, atomic bomb). They have produced glyphosate, the ingredient in the herbicide Roundup. In the ‘90’s,           Monsanto introduced genetically engineered seeds, injecting the seeds with the herbicide Roundup. Farmers were told that with these new GE seeds, they could control the weeds surrounding their crops. But among other issues, this has back-fired, for farmers are now having to deal with super weeds.

Between 1996-2011, Roundup ready GMO crops increased herbicide use in the US by 527 million pounds – even though Monsanto claimed the GMO crops would reduce pesticide and herbicide use.

In the 20 years of intensifying exposure, scientists have been documenting the health consequences of Roundup and glyphosate in our food, in the water we drink and in the air we breath. It has been found that people who are sick have higher levels of glyphosate in their bodies than healthier people.

Some of the health problems which the scientists have attributed exposure to Roundup/glyphosates are: ADHA; Alzheimer’s; autism; birth defects; brain, breast, prostate and lung cancers. I could go on and on – celiac disease; depression, heat disease; Parkinson’s disease; ALS; and hormone disruption.

No one can deny that these health issues have been on the increase. The longer you are exposed to these toxic chemicals, the more likely you will develop one of these issues. And with young people they have been exposed from the start of their life.

Flavr-Savr – The Tomato With No Taste

A Timeline for GMO’s


1987 – The first field tests of genetically engineered crops, tobacco and tomato crops, are conducted in the United States.

1992 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture approves the “Flavr Savr” tomato strain, intended to be resistant to softening and consequent rotting. This was the first genetically engineered food to be granted a license for human consumption.

1994 – The Flavr Savr tomato was brought to market, this tomato created a small sensation, a tomato designed to withstand the rigors of shipping, one that would last in your kitchen for weeks, in other words, a frankenfood! Frankenfood, most have not heard this word, but it is the new “buzz” word of the day, meaning a genetically engineered food.

1996 – First GMO soybeans are planted in US

1997 – Flavr Savr tomatoes are taken off the US food market.

Europe requirement for labeling of ingredients is outlined.

1998 – Monsanto introduces Roundup-ready corn and canola (rapeseed) oil.

1999 –  Europe leads big food manufacturers to commit to removing all GM ingredients in EU food products. Major food chains in England announce their intention to avoid all GM ingredients.

The story goes on and on. This just gives you the idea of the progression of GMO foods. Many European countries will not allow the import of US GMO products.

Speaking about tomatoes, if you mention that tomatoes don’t taste like they used to, people will agree with you that they have no taste. Tomatoes at the supermarket look just like tomatoes – red, firm, and juicy, and some even have little pieces of vine attached, the only thing is, they don’t have the delicious tomato flavor. The most popular home grown plant is the the tomato. Every backyard gardener will have at least one tomato plant. We all want that delicious taste we remember as a kid.

Well in steps the University of Florida (Go Gators!). By a process of breeding and crossbreeding, they are putting the flavor and sweetness back into our tomatoes. Not by messing with the DNA, but by painstakingly breeding and cross-pollinating thousands of different varieties. This has taken years. They have come up with a tomato they call Tasti-Lee. They are a naturally developed vine ripened tomato high in Lycopene and are non-GMO! Look for them at Whole Foods and Publix.

The “Rest of the Story” on GMO’s

In last week’s newsletter I showed you how we are being lied to by the chemical companies and the media. I pointed out that if you are content to just be a “follower” and take everything you read in the news media and believe what we are programed to believe, you will find yourself and your families opening yourselves to very dangerous environmental toxins.

In the next few weeks I will attempt to answer the following questions:

  • What are Genetically Modified Organism’s?
  • When were they introduced?
  • Why should we be concerned?
  • What known GMO’s are on the market?
  • How do we avoid them?
  • What should we do about the labeling of GMO food?

What are GMOs, genetically modified foods? A GMO (genetically modified organism) is the result of a laboratory process where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into the genes of an unrelated plant or animal. The foreign genes may come from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals or even humans.

GMOs are different from cross breeding or selective breeding, GMOs change the DNA of a plant or animal. Many consumers mistakenly believe that the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approves GMO crops only after careful study. Instead, the agency claimed it was not aware of any significant difference from other food crops and declared safety testing unnecessary. In reality, according to FDA documents later made public in a lawsuit, the consensus among FDA scientists was the GMOs were different and dangerous and needed rigorous, long-term testing to prevent allergies, toxins, new diseases and nutritional problems.

And from reading last week’s newsletter, you see how the very manufacturers that are profiting from GMO crops, are the ones writing the reports the federal government is depending upon whether to approve these toxic practices.

We will mostly be talking about our fruits and vegetables. But a whole other subject is the about the Bovine Growth Hormone (BGH) that is being injected into our cattle and the disastrous result that we are seeing, namely; incidence of young girls hormonally maturing at an earlier age; creating over exposure to antibiotics, thus creating antibiotic resistance in humans; and an increase in allergies.

Next week I will be talking about the timeline of the introduction of GMO foods. A hint, do any of you remember the Flavr Savr Tomato? It was the first genetically crop product to be commercialized. It was engineered to increase storage life, not by selective breeding, but by changing the DNA of the tomato. Great! But what about taste?

Who Should We Believe?

            This week I am going to “give the other side of the story” about an article in the Florida Today Newspaper titled “Genetic frankenfood found not harmful to human health.” In short, the story was about GMOs, genetically engineered crops, and the fact that the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NAS) reported that GMOs are “safe for humans and animals to eat.”

The NAS report is strategically timed as the question of whether or not to label foods that have been genetically modified has been and will be coming up for people to vote on. Chemical companies that have millions invested in developing GMO foods, are fighting this labeling.  This is called the “Dark Act”, Deny Americans the Right to Know Act.

The “Dark Act” was defeated in California as the result of Monsanto and Dow Chemical pouring millions of dollars into defeating the Bill. But Vermont passed this Bill and the requirement to label GMO products will be mandatory in that state. It will come into effect in July. Florida will be voting on this Bill very soon.

There is much controversy about the safety of these GMO crops. Much of Western Europe has, or are banning GMO foods and are even not allowing GMO foods from being imported from the US into their countries.

Before I talk about what GMOs are, I want to first clarify who the NAS is and why they would publish such a report.

By just doing a little research (I do the research…so you can choose wisely), it is not difficult to see where the funding is coming from to do the research. This is what I found:

According to a report by the Food & Water Watch and others,( public interest groups that are independent of corporate and government influence), The National Research Council (NRC), which is the research arm of the NAS, takes millions of dollars in funding from biotechnology companies; invites sponsors such as Monsanto to sit on high-level boards overseeing the NRC’s work; draws scientific conclusions based on the industry science they are supposed to be investigating; where millions of dollars are donated to the NAS by companies like, Monsanto, DuPont, General Mills, Purina; has committee members with ties to Monsanto, Bayer, Dow; and the list goes on and on.

NRC has not publicly exposed these ties, but many groups have called on the NRC to reduce the industry influence. What is so bad, the NAS is chartered by Congress to provide scientific advice to the federal government. We have a prime example of “set the fox to guard the henhouse” syndrome.

So this newsletter is just a heads up to my discussion on GMO’s in the coming newsletters.

Some say, “why worry?”, “we are all going to die.” Won’t it be better to “live until you die?” Which means, do you want to spend your last days in a nursing home, or suffering with a horrific disease? This drip, drip, drip of our ingesting toxic chemicals is taking a toll on our national health for us and for our children.

An Alert! The Contaminates In Our Water

            I am writing this special report. I can not seem to get away from writing about the need to have a water filtration system. As I stated in previous newsletters, water is our most important nutrient, we die without it. We are all effected by the contaminants, particularly in our water, we are exposed to daily.

What prompted me to write this newsletter was an article in our local newspaper, The Florida Today. Most of you are from different areas, but this effects all of us no matter what city you live in. The title of the story on page 3A was “System Exceeds Limit on Byproducts.” “Brevard County’s largest water supplier recently violated federal drinking water standards for a group of byproducts of disinfection linked to increased lifetime cancer risk.”

The contamination is formed by a combination of chlorine (which is a health hazard in and of itself, see my Issue #5 of Lu’s Views) and disinfection byproducts. Disinfection byproducts form when chlorine reacts when rotting leaves, algae or other organic matter are present in our water. This byproduct is called triholomethanes or TTHMs.

The article also noted that the amount of TTHMs in our water supply averages about 83.6 parts per billion.  This sounds like a very incidental amount to be worried. The article also noted that the TTHMs exceeded 95.9 parts/billion a couple of months ago.

Why should we be concerned? In 1998 the legal limit was set at 80 parts/billion. This seems to have been an arbitrary number. Just look at the research that has been done since that time.

In 2011 a French research team found that men exposed to more than 50 p/b had significantly increased bladder cancer.

In 2010 a study by the National Cancer Institute found that a quarter of the human population may have a genetic susceptibility that raises its risk of bladder cancer from trihalomethanes.

In 2007 a scientific team in Spain associated exposure to trihalomethanes greater than 35 p/b with increased bladder risks. Also in 2007 researchers reported that people faced twice the odds of dying from bladder cancer if they drank water with trihalomethanes contamination greater than 21 p/b.

The EPA regulates just nine pollutants generated by chlorine – four trihalomethanes and five haloacetic acids. These nine chemicals represent less than 2% of the more than 600 unwanted chemicals created by the interaction of water treatment disinfectants and pollutants in our water source. So having the belief that the EPA is protecting us, is nothing but false hope. This is planned.

I must give the paper some credit, as the article went on to say “but the contamination from total TTHs is nothing a pitcher filter and a little air time can’t cure.” It makes it sound like no big deal – which of course is meant not to have people panic, which is understandable.

But I will continue to “shout it from the rooftops” everyone must have a water filtration system! The incidence of urinary tract infections in men and woman is affecting just about everyone. Open your eyes.

Issue #8 is my discussion of the different types of water filtration available. I use a 4 stage pitcher filtration system because I live in a condo. In my homes I always had a whole house filtration system. Numerous studies have shown that showering, bathing, washing your hands and cooking with unfiltered water contributes more to the total exposure of these contaminates than drinking water. Part of this can be solved by attaching a shower filter head.
